Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM

Thu Dec 24, 2009, 5:43 AM
Here's another review of a photo equipment in which you may find useful and adds to your considerations of purchasing it.

First of all lemme start with the specs;
- Canon, made in Japan
- 50mm focal length, fixed (only allows manual zoom - photographer going backwards and forwards :p)
- Maximum aperture of 1.4
- Features micro USM motor
- Full time manual focus

I got this lens about 2 weeks ago, and I can only say that it's my favorite lens to date (now my kit is feeling the discriminative treatment of having to "rest it out" on most of my photoshoots haha). I got this as an upgrade from my former fixed 50mm, which is the f/1.8 version. This new lens costs about 4 times as much, but totally worth the upgrade.

The first thing you're gonna notice about the f/1.4 USM is its chunky-ness. For a prime 50mm, it's significantly and noticably bigger in size than the f/1.8 version, although not quite as big as the f/1.2L version :)

If you've used the 1.8 prime 50mm before, than you're not really gonna notice the difference going into 1.4 in terms of DoF coverage, as the bump up of 0.4 isnt exactly a whopper one either. If this is your first prime 50mm than buckle up your seatbelts you are going to be exhillirated on the ability of this fast night lens at wide open aperture. I once was shooting outdoors at 11pm-ish, only had the ambience of the streetlight however I was shooting at an average of 1/250s at f/1.4 using ISO 100!! haha

Built is significantly better than the 1.8, it actually feels as expensive as it is LoL the micro USM motor is very helpful, in the sense that it takes less than 1 second to pinpoint a focus spot, it can not be heard, super silent, and 90% of the time dead accurate.. with an AF assist beam from a flash then it makes it 100% accurate :D

The colour composition you get with this lens is also astoundingly beautiful, use a cloudy white balance with Portrait picture style and you'll end up in near-to-perfect portrait shots all the time, making you wonder how did you ever live without one before.

I'd love to write more on this but I'm haggling this computer use with my cousin so I'll wrap up now haha. 9/10 grade from me, expect to pay around USD 300-350 for the lens, if you're in Indonesia you'd be paying aroun IDR 3.300.000.. no more thoughts. get it! :D

The dream of taking pictures have intrigued me for quite some time now. I started liking the idea of "documenting" life since i was in mid school. Now i'm in my 4th year of university studie ehehe :D

Got the chance to actually start picking up a camera and snap away about 3 months ago, so you can say in terms of passion i've been in this for years, but when it comes to practice i'm a total noob..

i believe in minimum editing photography and i can't stop emphasizing that. because as much as it is a trend to "digitally cook" your photos, I've never been a fan of darkroom effects. I am what I am, and that is hor my photography is.

Every shot is made with passion, there's no such thing as a snapshot in my dictionary, every frame has its function, its meaning, my medium to convet my message.

Hope you enjoy the page, not perfect i know, but i am trying.. Cheerio! :D
