Canon 135mm f/2 L USM

Mon Feb 8, 2010, 12:13 AM
Okay so the other day i finally decided to invest on a new lens. After long consideration and consultation with other fellow photographers, i decided to get this nice Canon 135mm f/2L USM. This lens ain't new, but its one of the worth-it lenses out there.

This lens goes with many possible utilities, so its not as specific as the new Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro IS USM for instance, but also not as general use as the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. In some online reviews people would indentify this lens as a mid-telephoto lens, covering a true mid in full frame bodies, but achieves quite the distance on APS-C sensor crops, equal to almost 186mm-ish I think. Recommendable uses would be for indoor sports photography, entry-level macro photography, and amazingly sharp for portraiture.

The build of the lens is excellent, it feels right. The weight is ideal, not heavy but it doesnt feel plasticky either. The shell isnt made with the same material as the grey tank-like material as found in the 70-200 above L lenses (probably not as strong) but still feels solid, one could feel this lens costs money :D It's black build has some shiny some doff parts which is nice and of course the red band near the end of the lenses as that famous signature of Canon's flagship series of lenses is there. Elite feel.

Comes with the ET-78II hood, which is fully barelled (not petal) which doesn't look as cool as the petal hoods but functional nonetheless.

Optical quality so far is amazing. For general photography use this lens rules, but combine it to creat high-fashion shots with strobes, and you'll produce photos so sharp that your MUA will have a fit on you :p chromatic abberation is nicely minimised. Conclusively what one would expect coming from an L series lens.

Non-IS function is nicely complemented by its wide open aperture capabilities, at f/2 the lens on my APS-C 500D is quite sharp, step it down to f/2.8 and you'll have a crisp sharp foreground a nice blurred background.

People say as this is one of the best L lenses ever made, it becomes increasingly challenging to get one. In Indonesia the common market rate for this baby is IDR 7.700.000 which translates to about USD 770.. But mine was purchased for IDR 8.950.000 or around USD 895.. Its not cheap i tell you, but its totally worth it. To me the add from Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM to the Canon 135mm f/2 L is a wonderful step, and i really think you should too! :)

The dream of taking pictures have intrigued me for quite some time now. I started liking the idea of "documenting" life since i was in mid school. Now i'm in my 4th year of university studie ehehe :D

Got the chance to actually start picking up a camera and snap away about 3 months ago, so you can say in terms of passion i've been in this for years, but when it comes to practice i'm a total noob..

i believe in minimum editing photography and i can't stop emphasizing that. because as much as it is a trend to "digitally cook" your photos, I've never been a fan of darkroom effects. I am what I am, and that is hor my photography is.

Every shot is made with passion, there's no such thing as a snapshot in my dictionary, every frame has its function, its meaning, my medium to convet my message.

Hope you enjoy the page, not perfect i know, but i am trying.. Cheerio! :D
